Połonina Wetlińska and Caryńska - trails, views and practical tips
Two of the most famous mountain pastures in the Bieszczady Mountains. How to climb them, how long the hike takes, and what to keep in mind when planning a ridge climb.
The Połoniny are the heart of the Bieszczady Mountains—treeless ridges where the wind lays grass, and the horizon stretches endlessly. Two of them, Wetlińska and Caryńska , are, for many, a must-see on any Bieszczady trip. They lie within the boundaries of Bieszczady National Park, so entry tickets are required and you must follow marked trails only.
Połonina Wetlińska
The Połonina Wetlińska massif stretches along a long ridge with several peaks, the highest of which reach approximately 1,255 m (3,900 ft). The most popular and shortest approach leads from Przełęcz Wyżna along the yellow trail to the Chatka Puchatka mountain hut—a cult spot for rest and a cup of tea. The ascent usually takes about an hour, and the panoramic view from the ridge is worth every step.
Połonina Caryńska
The neighboring Połonina Caryńska (1,297 m) is slightly higher and steeper. The classic ascent is from the Wyżniańska Pass , and the route can be followed along a ridge with a descent in Brzegi Górne or to Ustrzyki Górne. This is a demanding but incredibly scenic mountain range—especially at dawn, when the valleys are filled with mist.
When to go
The most beautiful time is early morning – that's when you have the greatest chance of seeing the famous Bieszczady "sea of fog" filling the valleys. Golden autumn (September-October) paints the beech forests red and gold. In summer, the mountain pastures can be hot and lacking shade, so it's worth taking a hat and some water.
What to remember
- The weather changes rapidly —on the open ridge, there's nowhere to shelter from storms or winds. Check the forecast before heading out.
- Hiking boots and layered clothing are essential – it can be much colder and windier at the top than in the valley.
- Stay on the trail – this is national park territory, and the meadows are a sensitive ecosystem.
- You can buy an entrance ticket to BdPN at the ticket offices at the entrances to the trails.
Wetlińska and Caryńska are hikes that will stay with you for a long time. All you need is good weather, comfortable shoes, and an early wake-up call—and the Bieszczady Mountains will reveal one of their most beautiful views.
